It is my pleasure to offer my wholehearted endorsement of James Blair for Pickering City Council, Ward 1
I have known James for more than fifteen years, having first met him in the fall of 2010 through a mutual friend who recognized our shared passion for food systems, local agriculture, food security, and building stronger, healthier communities.
From our very first conversations, it became clear that James understood something many people overlook: food is not simply about what appears on our dinner table. Food is directly connected to public health, education, local economies, environmental stewardship, municipal planning, agriculture, and the long-term sustainability of our communities. James recognized that communities become stronger when they support local farmers, protect productive farmland, and ensure future generations have access to healthy, locally produced food.
Soon after we met, I became involved in supporting James with the Dunbarton High School Farmers' Market and later the highly successful Chef Challenge hosted at Dunbarton High School. These initiatives brought together farmers, students, chefs, educators, local businesses, community organizations, and volunteers in a way that demonstrated James' remarkable ability to unite people around a common purpose. His leadership created opportunities for students to better understand where their food comes from while strengthening the connection between agriculture and the community.
James' commitment to local agriculture extended well beyond the classroom. He played an important role in supporting local farmers and was instrumental in helping establish the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus Farmers' Market. His efforts consistently focused on creating stronger connections between local food producers and consumers while encouraging residents to support agriculture within our own region. Together, we became founding members of the Durham Food Policy Council. The Council was created to bring together representatives from agriculture, public health, education, municipalities, environmental organizations, businesses, and community agencies to develop long-term strategies that would strengthen Durham Region's food system.
Our shared vision was to improve access to healthy food, support local farmers and food processors, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, strengthen food security, promote food literacy and education, reduce food insecurity, and protect agricultural lands that are vital to the future of Durham Region.
James understood that a healthy food system is not simply an agricultural issue—it is an economic, environmental, health, and municipal planning issue. He consistently advocated for policies that recognized the importance of preserving prime agricultural land while encouraging responsible growth that protects both taxpayers and future generations.
One of the qualities I have always admired about James is his ability to look beyond today's challenges and consider their long-term consequences. He understands that productive farmland is one of Ontario's most valuable natural and economic assets. Once it is lost to urban development, it is lost forever. Protecting farmland is not simply about preserving open space—it is about protecting food production, supporting local businesses, preserving rural communities, maintaining environmental sustainability, and ensuring future food security.
James also appreciates the financial realities associated with municipal growth. Responsible planning requires balancing development with the long-term costs of servicing new communities. Uncontrolled urban sprawl often results in significant expenditures for roads, water and wastewater infrastructure, transit, emergency services, schools, parks, and ongoing municipal maintenance. These long-term obligations can place increasing financial pressure on future taxpayers. James has consistently demonstrated an understanding that protecting strategic agricultural lands and encouraging well-planned, fiscally responsible development are complementary goals that help create financially sustainable municipalities.
Our work together also led us to become co-founders of the Durham Culinary Association, where James continued building partnerships between education, agriculture, culinary professionals, and the broader community. Through his leadership as an educator and through his student exchange initiatives, James developed meaningful relationships between local Pickering youth and their families with Indigenous and First Nations students in Waswanipi, Quebec. His interest in learning about traditional food systems, Indigenous knowledge, and food sovereignty further demonstrated his respect for diverse cultures and his belief that communities become stronger when they learn from one another.
Throughout the years I have known James, I have been consistently impressed by his ability to communicate effectively with people from every background. He is an exceptional listener who brings people together, earns their trust, and finds practical solutions to complex issues. Whether working with farmers, educators, municipal officials, business leaders, students, or community volunteers, James has always demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and genuine respect for others.
As a former Director of Operations for Nestlé Canada, I have worked alongside many capable professionals throughout my career. James distinguishes himself because of his ability to quickly understand complicated issues, build meaningful partnerships, facilitate productive discussions, and move ideas into action. These are qualities that are essential for effective municipal leadership.
Although my wife, Julie, and I have since moved away from Pickering, we spent over 30 years wonderful years living in the Rougemount community. We remember the strong sense of community that first attracted us to Pickering. James understands that same spirit because Pickering is not simply the city where he works—it is the community that he and his young family proudly call home. His commitment to the future of Pickering is personal. Like every parent, he wants to see the city remain a safe, vibrant, financially responsible community where families can thrive, neighbourhoods remain connected, and future generations enjoy the same quality of life that first attracted many of us to Pickering. He genuinely cares about residents, listens carefully to their concerns, and consistently speaks on behalf of ordinary people. Even though we no longer call Pickering home, we remain confident that James Blair possesses the experience, integrity, knowledge, and leadership necessary to represent the residents of Ward 1 with distinction. His understanding of agriculture, food security, education, municipal governance, fiscal responsibility, environmental stewardship, and community development provides him with a unique perspective that would greatly benefit the City of Pickering.
Perhaps what impresses me most is that James has never viewed public service as a means of personal recognition. Throughout the many years that I have known him, his focus has always been on serving others, building partnerships, supporting local farmers, strengthening communities, and leaving things better than he found them. Those are qualities that cannot be taught—they are qualities of character. I am proud to endorse James Blair for Pickering Ward 1 City Council. I believe he has demonstrated throughout his career that he is committed to building stronger communities, protecting valuable agricultural lands, supporting local farmers, encouraging responsible municipal growth, and ensuring that future generations inherit a healthy, financially sustainable, and vibrant City of Pickering.
For these reasons, I encourage the residents of Ward 1 to place their confidence in James Blair. I believe Pickering will be exceptionally well served by having him represent its citizens at City Hall. As parents, we have had the opportunity to observe firsthand the positive impact James Blair has had on youth in our community through his coaching, mentorship, and leadership in school-based and community sports programs.
Our daughter had the privilege of being coached and mentored by James during her involvement in athletics, and the experience had a meaningful and lasting impact on her development both as an athlete and as a young person. Through his guidance, she gained not only technical skills in sport, but also confidence, discipline, teamwork, and a stronger sense of
personal responsibility.
What stood out to us most was James’ ability to connect with young people in a way that made them feel seen, respected, and supported. He has a unique approach to coaching that goes beyond performance and results. Instead, he focuses on helping youth understand their potential, build resilience, and learn how to work effectively with others in a positive and encouraging environment.
Our daughter also had the opportunity to participate in an educational and cultural exchange experience involving students from Nunavut. This experience broadened her understanding of Inuit communities, culture, and traditional knowledge, and it had a profound impact on her personal growth and worldview.
During this exchange, there was a significant and unexpected challenge when the program was extended by several days and our daughter’s travel documents were misplaced. In that moment, James Blair demonstrated extraordinary leadership, care, and responsibility. Rather than stepping back, he took direct action to ensure she was supported, accounted for, and ultimately able to travel safely home. He remained committed until she was safely on her flight and returned to us.
As parents, we will never forget that level of commitment. It reflected not only the actions of a coach and educator, but also a deep sense of guardianship and responsibility for the youth in his care. That same level of dedication was evident in his coaching on the wrestling team and in all of his interactions with students and families.
In our view, James Blair’s life can be understood as a community resume of public service dedicated to youth development, mentorship, and opportunity. His actions consistently demonstrate that he is willing to go beyond what is expected in order to ensure that young people are supported, safe, and given every opportunity to succeed.
We also know, as parents, that we hope our other children will have the same opportunities and guidance that our eldest received. We are confident that if James Blair is in a position to continue his work in the community, those same opportunities will be extended to many more young people across Pickering.
We believe individuals like James are rare—those who consistently invest in youth not for recognition, but because they genuinely care about their growth and success.

I have known James for more than twenty-five years, first meeting him in the fall of 2000 when it quickly became evident that his passion for education, youth development, and community involvement extended far beyond the classroom. From the very beginning, James demonstrated a genuine commitment to students, not only as learners but as young people who benefit from mentorship, opportunity, and belonging.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work closely with James through his involvement in coaching both male and female rugby, as well as wrestling programs that helped shape the lives of many young athletes in our community. His approach has always been inclusive, supportive, and focused on ensuring that every student—regardless of ability or background— had a place to participate, grow, and succeed.
When James left Pine Ridge Secondary School in 2005 to take a position at Dunbarton High School, he demonstrated something that left a lasting impression on me: he kept his word and remained committed to the students and programs he had helped build. He continued to involve Pine Ridge students in the Dunbarton wrestling program and ensured that athletes he had previously coached in rugby were still welcomed and supported. He actively worked to maintain continuity for students during that transition, including integrating many Pine Ridge athletes into the Dunbarton Girls Rugby program and broader opportunities, including competitive travel experiences such as tournaments in Tennessee in 2005.
This level of commitment is rare. It demonstrated not only leadership, but integrity and a deep sense of responsibility to the young people he had coached and mentored.
Throughout the years, James has consistently focused on inclusion and opportunity. His work in sport has never been about competition alone—it has been about building confidence, discipline, teamwork, and respect among young people. He understands that extracurricular programs are often where students find their voice, develop leadership skills, and build lifelong friendships. In the fall of 2024, I had the opportunity to visit Dunbarton High School and witness firsthand the impact James continues to have. I observed a wrestling program with nearly fifty students— both male and female—actively participating, engaged, and motivated under his leadership. It was clear that James continues to inspire students at a high level, creating an environment where young people feel encouraged to try new things, challenge themselves, and be part of something meaningful.
James Blair is, above all, a community builder. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the wrestling room, he consistently demonstrates patience, leadership, and a genuine belief in the potential of every student. His ability to connect with young people and earn their trust is exceptional.
Having worked in education and youth development for more than two decades myself, I recognize the qualities that truly make a difference. James possesses those qualities: consistency, integrity, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to youth success. He leads not for recognition, but because he genuinely cares about the development and well-being of the students and families he serves.
James has always been the students’ largest advocate. As a coach of the Dunbarton High School girls' rugby team, James inspired countless student-athletes to believe in themselves, work as a team, and strive for excellence. We first met James through his role as a coach for Dunbarton High School’s rugby and wrestling teams, where he quickly distinguished himself through his dedication, leadership, and genuine commitment to his students. What set James apart was not only his passion for teaching, but the care he consistently showed in supporting youth beyond athletics. When my daughter first joined wrestling, she was hesitant to compete in front of large crowds; however, James’s belief in her gave her the confidence to believe in herself. He turned every moment into a teachable one and never missed an opportunity to recognize his athletes along the way.
Through his inclusive leadership style, James created an environment where every student felt valued and motivated to succeed. He emphasized teamwork, resilience, and personal responsibility—lessons that extended far beyond sport and into everyday life. More importantly, he demonstrated the significance of individual roles within the broader community, reinforcing that meaningful change begins at the local level.
This was especially evident in his work organizing the student exchange program to Pangnirtung, Nunavut. James played a pivotal role in bringing this initiative to life, coordinating fundraising efforts such as auctions, potlucks, and community events. Through this process, he not only raised awareness of important social issues but also helped unite the community around a shared purpose. Welcoming students from Pangnirtung became a powerful example of how collective effort can foster connection, understanding, and lasting impact.
In addition, James brought meaningful awareness to food security issues on a national scale. Through hands-on initiatives such as farm visits and community-based learning, he educated students and families about Canadian farming systems and the challenges they face. He emphasized the importance of sustaining these agricultural networks for future generations, highlighting the shared responsibility to protect them. By connecting these issues to local involvement, he deepened our understanding of how community action contributes to long-term national well-being—something I, as a parent, had the privilege of learning through my daughter.

I have known Mr. Blair since 2005, when I was a Grade 10 student at Dunbarton High School. Over the years that followed, he was far more than a teacher and coach — he was a true mentor. He coached the Dunbarton High School girls’ rugby team I played on and organized our unforgettable team trip to California. That experience remains one of the highlights of my youth.
What stood out most was how Mr. Blair advocated for us. He consistently stood up for his players and students, ensuring we had the support and opportunities we needed. Beyond the game and the classroom, he taught us life lessons that I still carry with me to this day — lessons about resilience, teamwork, integrity, and believing in yourself. In my later high school years, when he was also one of my teachers, that same guidance and care continued.

Having known James directly and indirectly for the better part of 25 years, I have seen firsthand his dedication to our community. He coached my eldest daughter and organized her team's tour to Florida in 2001. Later, when my second daughter attended Dunbarton High School, James again coached and organized a tour to Fullerton, California in 2006—an initiative where I had the privilege of attending as a community chaperone with the newly found Pickering Legionnaires Rugby Club.
Reconnecting with James at the 20th anniversary of that tour, I was thrilled to learn he had decided to step forward and run for City Council. James possesses the ideal combination of skills, knowledge, practical ability, and vision required for municipal leadership. Most importantly, he brings a deep passion for seeing vital projects and community programming through to fruition. His leadership will not only benefit the youth of Pickering, but will serve taxpayers and the broader community with accountability and strength.

I have known James for the last decade through our shared passion of helping youth succeed. Having lived in Pickering in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s I understand the future of any community involves the youth. James has supported the youth of Pickering as an educator, coach and mentor. His knowledge, organizational skills, teamwork and leadership have been a benefit to the youth of Pickering.
I worked directly with James in bringing a group of Inuit youth from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut to Ontario where he hosted them at my alma mater Dunbarton High School. James was a gracious host who demonstrated sensitivity and compassionate to a group of Inuit youth from an indigenous fly in community north of the Arctic circle who had never left home. James has an incredible work ethic and won’t quit until the job is done as he showed when hosting myself and the Inuit youth.

It is with great pleasure I write to you as I enthusiastically put forth my endorsement of James Blair in his campaign for Pickering City Council.
I first met Mr. Blair as a Grade 9 student at Pine Ridge Secondary School. As a student athlete I was looking for new ways to get involved within my school and decided to join the rugby team. Mr. Blair was the founder and Head Coach of the Girls Rugby Team at Pine Ridge and very quickly became more than a coach to myself-he became a mentor.
Being a member of this team was a highlight of my high school career. With Mr. Blair leading the way I was constantly learning little life lessons from him such as teamwork, leading with integrity and always believing in yourself. One thing was always for certain is that Mr. Blair always had his players and students backs and we could always count on him being there for us. The thing that made Mr. Blair a great teacher and coach was that he is approachable. He was always someone who his students could comfortably approach, have a meaningful conversation with and seek guidance from.
I took great pride in playing rugby under the leadership of Mr. Blair during this time, so much so that when he moved his teaching career to Dunbarton High School I followed him on his journey to assist him in starting a Girls Rugby Team at a new school from the ground up. Mr. Blair has an obvious passion for community and youth sports and it was an absolute honor to not only assist him in developing a new team but to learn from him during this time how to be a leader.
I grew up in Pickering and am still a resident of this City. I have watched Pickering grow, develop and go through many changes. I cannot think of a better individual to be part of Pickering’s City Council than that of Mr. James Blair. He fights for what he believes in, always has his communities’ best interests at heart and is a man of integrity. I truly believe that he would excel in this position and can honestly say that The City of Pickering would be lucky to have someone like Mr. Blair fighting for them.

James consistently demonstrated a genuine concern for students' growth and well-being in the classroom and beyond. He created an environment where students felt comfortable asking questions, exploring new ideas, and challenging their assumptions. More importantly, he encouraged students to think critically about the world around them and to develop the confidence to form their own perspectives.
I am especially grateful to James for the role he played in my academic and career development. His class was one of the first places where I seriously considered what life after high school might look like, including where I wanted to study and what career opportunities were available to me. Through his guidance, I became interested in studying mathematics and learned about careers such as being a statistician and actuarial science. His encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue a degree in mathematics, which later helped lead me to my career as a Software Engineer. I remain thankful that he encouraged me to explore my interests and helped me better understand the possibilities available to me.

I have known James for the past 3 years, and I have seen firsthand how he connects people from all communities and across different regions of Canada, bringing them together around a common goal. I am truly impressed with James's ability to see the often complex world we live in, which often starts by listing things or reasons why something cannot be done, while James, in my direct firsthand experience, sees the world through a lens of how things can be done or must be done.
Working with James over the past few years to achieve our shared goal of facilitating programming that connects and educates local youth with Indigenous, Inuit & Metis youth and the communities they come from across Canada has truly been inspiring.
James, in my opinion, is the fresh breath of air needed to restart meaningful communication and dialogue between citizens of Pickering and the surrounding communities, found not only within the Region of Durham but also across the province of Ontario.
